Which Bible is Right?

I teach a class on New Testament Greek, and often have this conversation in class. Most, it seems, assume the English version of the Bible they have in their hands is the correct and inerrant (without error) word of God. The simple fact that we have multiple English translations and even multiple editions and revisions of the same translation makes this illogical. For example, the NIV (New International Version) was first printed 1978. The editors made a few changes five years later, and then made more changes in 2011. If someone were to pick up a 1984 copy of the NIV and claim, “This is God’s perfect word!” and someone else were to pick up a copy of the 2011 NIV and make the same claim, one of them would, logically, be wrong.
